Ask John.
John Sample’s musical journey began with the guitar, a passion that kept him strumming for years. When COVID-19 paused jam sessions with friends, John rediscovered an old harmonica and decided to give it a fresh shot. Guided by a harmonica class he’d taken years before and a few YouTube lessons, John began learning to play—but quickly ran into a couple of common challenges.
Like many players, John struggled to hit the right holes consistently, and more than once, he found himself playing the harmonica upside down. Rather than get frustrated, John turned to his natural inventiveness for a solution.
With a background as a creator—complete with a U.S. patent and several other product innovations—John designed and refined what would become the TopFret artwork. His intuitive design makes harmonicas easier to orient in low light and provides high-contrast markers to help players locate key holes quickly and effortlessly.
Today, John combines his passion for music with his knack for problem-solving to make harmonica playing more accessible and enjoyable for players of all levels.
